WEEE/Recycling

Learn about the eco-friendly WEEE directive and how Lyco helps you meet its aims.

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) was introduced into UK law in January 2007 with the aim to reduce the amount of electrical and electronic equipment being produced and to encourage everyone to reuse, recycle and recover it.

The WEEE Directive looks to improve the environmental performance of businesses that manufacture, supply, use, recycle and recover electrical and electronic equipment (EEE).

You may have obligations under the WEEE Regulations if you have electrical or electronic equipment to dispose of, or if you sell electrical or electronic equipment. Organisations need to ensure that all separately collected WEEE is treated and recycled. However, whether the business or the producer of the (EEE) pays for this depends on the circumstances.

You can find out more about your duty of care and disposal of WEEE on the NetRegs site www.netregs.gov.uk

The Lyco WEEE Service

Light bulb manufacturers provide free recycling at the end of a product’s life by charging a WEEE levy at the time of purchase, for all light bulbs/tubes that contain mercury. This levy is consistent across all manufacturers and amounts to 3p per unit for small integrated compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and 10p per unit for CFLs, tubes and other discharge lamps.

This levy does not include collection and delivery of spent light bulbs to a recycling area, however Lyco provide this service for our customers.

Legislation

Lyco’s resident experts on low-energy lighting measure the quickening pulse of building regulation compliance.

Lighting installed in any new build and some building extensions have to include at least 30% low energy lights. Typically, this means light fittings that will only take compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), LEDs or discharge lamps.

Unfortunately, merely fitting low energy lamps with standard bayonet or screw caps will not conform to the regulations. Check the current regulations with your local authority building control department or download a free copy of the Part L building regulation from the government planning portal http://www.planningportal.gov.uk for full details.

Speak to our Low Energy Advice Team for help on choosing light fittings which comply to the regulations.
