LED is the game-changing technology of the moment, but what’s in it for you?

A Guide to Ultra Low Energy LED

Last up to 50 times longer and use 90% less energy*

LEDs give a powerful light while using a fraction of the power required and are now a real alternative to traditional lighting without having to compromise on quality of light. Contrary to popular belief they are no longer an expensive alternative and are now quick to light up.

LEDs are available for all the standard light bulb holders and in all bulb types, including:

Spotlights: GU10, MR16, MR11, PAR, (plus PAR 20, 30 and 38) and AR111

Regular Shape Bulbs: Golf ball, candle and GLS

There is a wide selection of products to choose from that will fit your existing light fittings without any expensive refitting required and our trained team are here to assist you in making the right selection.

Indoor: LED light panels, linkable strip lights, standard and cabinet downlights, and emergency lights

NB When changing over to LED bulbs check the compatibility of your existing emergency lights

Outdoor: walkover lights, garden lights, spotlights, post lights, bollards, wall lights, strip lights, spikes and floodlights

Things to consider when choosing LED

Make sure you replace like-for-like as LEDs are different from traditional and low-energy bulbs. Use our tips below to help you select what you need or phone our LED team on 01908 651 100 for advice.

LED wattage comparisons cannot be made in the same way that we compare low energy bulbs to incandescent (traditional) light bulbs, so to give you an idea what to buy for the brightness you require, all products available in our catalogue, or on www.lyco.co.uk show a wattage comparison guide.

Lumens represent the amount of light emitted by a light source, such as a light bulb. Light bulbs are now commonly labelled with their light output in lumens and on 1 September 2010, European Union legislation came into force mandating that lighting equipment must be labelled primarily in terms of lumens, instead of watts of electricity consumed. This change is a result of the EU’s Eco-design Directive for Energy-using Products. Working out the significance of a particular lumens output per bulb is quite an involved task so for now we would recommend you use the wattage guide on packaging to determine the brightness of each bulb.

All LED s incorporate integrated LED chips, and the bulbs are built with a metal body which draws heat away from these chips in order to protect them. In some designs this metal body may be slightly larger than a traditional bulb. All our bulbs are shown with sizes so check before you order that the ones you choose will fit. If in doubt simply call our team.

LEDs are available in warm white, white, cool white and daylight colourways, as well as other non-white colours. The effect of these colours may differ from brand to brand and provide different shades of light. Check what colour you want and where possible buy the same brand and colourway for each room. It would be a good idea to replace all your bulbs with LED in one go, and buy spares for consistency.

The product description will provide an idea of how many hours a bulb should last for so from that figure you can work out how many years the bulb will last. If a description only states the number of years make sure you check the criteria for that calculation e.g. a bulb which is on 12 hours a day will last for approximately 11 years, whereas a bulb on 24/7 will only last 5 years.

In addition, the life of some bulbs may be affected by the amount of times it is switched on and off. Check the product description/label for more details.

Dimming Systems

Some LEDs are incompatible with certain dimming systems so even if a product purports to be dimmable, it is always advisable to buy a small quantity in order to test compatibility first.

LED Replacement Projects

Lyco has spent over 15 years at the forefront of lighting technology and over the last 12 months alone we have saved our customers an estimated £1,000,000 in their energy bills. When replacing your traditional lighting we would always suggest you focus first on the areas where lights are on 24 hours a day. These will include corridors, reception areas, washrooms and car parks.

The second phase of any LED project should include all other areas such as bedrooms, meeting rooms, bars and restaurants.
